Handspring Puppet Company, Dogs of War, 1997, mixed media.

The puppet originally used in the seminal South African play, Ubu and the Truth Commission, written by Jane Taylor and directed by William Kentridge, is another key figure in the CCAC. Depicting a three-headed dog as the beast of apartheid, the piece has as much historical value as metaphorical – the suitcase forming the “belly of the beast” was given to Sydney Kentridge by Bram Fischer at the Rivonia Trial.
